<p>Did you know that more than 40 percent of Australian consumers do their shopping online? E-commerce has exploded around the world, giving consumers more choice than ever before. Online shopping also allows global businesses to establish stronger market presence right here in Australia without ever building a storefront on our soil.</p>
<p>In a recent survey conducted by Colmar Brunton, more than 50% of respondents said they had bought items from overseas using online shopping, rather than buying from a retail store here at home. This question brought a round of comments from those respondents that signified a sense of frustration with how far behind the rest of the world our local retailers are.</p>
<p>The same survey reported that more than 90% of consumers fully expect retail stores to have online sales, offers and purchasing options. </p>
<p>Yet, when cross-questioned, the same respondents didn&#8217;t always focus on price-competitiveness. A large portion made it very clear that the primary reason they chose to shop online was convenience. The remaining responses indicated that broader product and company choices were their main reason for shopping online.</p>
<p>Spectacular Offline Failures</p>
<p>Despite the staggering rise in the number of online book sales over the past decade, two of Australia&#8217;s largest national bookstore chains chose to believe that online shopping wouldn&#8217;t affect them.</p>
<p>Both Angus &amp; Robertson and Borders Australia collapsed in spectacular style as a result of failing to see the benefits of offering customers an online outlet alongside their regular bricks-and-mortar trading.</p>
<p>By comparison, internationally-recognised clothing brand, Billabong, experienced a massive leap in profits by embracing a fully-functional website offering customers a way to purchase online. It&#8217;s reported that Billabong has experienced between 80% and 120% growth in business in September 2011, compared to the same month last year. How?
